Course Description
This course continues building on the skills learned in Japanese 1. The course focuses highly on common structures used in everyday conversation. We build speed and fluency in using hiragana and katakana, and learn approximately 100 kanji over the year. In Japanese 1, we learned formal Japanese. In Japanese 2, we learn informal Japanese, which is used in a majority of Japanese communication, and learn when and how to switch between informal and formal. In this course, we start to focus more on authentic Japanese, which includes a unit on the Japanese film Tonari no Totoro. We also explore Japanese culture, as we examine some of the elements of behavior and interaction that distinguish Japanese culture from western culture. The course is divided into multiple units, with each unit focusing on a theme. Most units are broken down into video explanations, followed by exercises and quizzes. Units also have 1-2 spoken or written assignments that are submitted digitally. Lastly, there are occasional tests as well. By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid understanding of the highest frequency language patterns, and have strengthened your ability at reading and writing Japanese.
